Vision: This Midlothian family dreamed of transforming their steep, unusable backyard into a private outdoor retreat that felt like a vacation destination. With older children at home, they wanted a space that encouraged family time, relaxation, and entertaining—all without leaving their property. Their biggest challenge? A dramatic slope that left the yard completely impractical for gatherings.

Design Features and Materials
The centerpiece of this backyard makeover is a fiberglass pool with a built-in autocover for both safety and low-maintenance convenience. Surrounding the pool, we installed a porcelain pool deck that delivers the elegance of natural stone while offering superior durability and resistance to weathering.
To enhance the resort-style design, we added a custom water feature that provides a striking focal point and the soothing sound of moving water. Natural stone steps now connect different elevations of the property, creating seamless transitions throughout the yard.
For year-round entertaining, a timber-framed pavilion with a built-in fireplace creates the ultimate outdoor gathering space—perfect for family nights, holiday parties, and cozy evenings by the fire.
Unique Aspects of Planning and Construction
Because of the property’s steep slope, this project required a significant retaining wall installation to stabilize the land and create level, usable space. This engineering solution not only solved a functional problem but also laid the groundwork for a luxury retreat.
By thoughtfully blending the porcelain hardscape, timber pavilion, fiberglass pool, and water feature, we created a space that balances beauty, safety, and function. Every detail was chosen to withstand Virginia’s seasons while maintaining timeless curb appeal.
